New Movella motion sensor backs up centimeter-accurate position data with high-bandwidth inertial measurements

Xsens MTi-8, a miniature surface-mount sensor from Movella, provides dead reckoning inputs to fill gaps or correct errors in data from RTK GNSS receivers

Enschede, The NetherlandsOctober 27, 2022 – Movella™, a global innovator of advanced technologies and products that sense, capture, and analyze movement, today launched the Xsens MTi-8, a miniature surface-mount motion sensor which combines centimeter-accurate positioning data outputs with a high-bandwidth inertial navigation system (INS) to enable precise dead reckoning.

The new MTi-8’s INS is based on a proven inertial measurement unit – a platform first implemented in the existing MTi-3 and MTi-7 products. The MTi-8 also features an RTK GNSS satellite positioning receiver interface. The interface is compatible with universal NMEA signals, and with u-blox, Septentrio and Trimble data formats.

The MTi-8’s on-board INS capability means that RTK satellite positioning data can be enhanced in various ways:

  • To maintain real-time position information by dead reckoning in tunnels, under bridges and in other locations in which the satellite and/or RTK signal may be lost temporarily
  • To correct intermittently faulty satellite position information when a positioning and/or RTK signal is temporarily lost or distorted
  • To increase the update rate of position and velocity data in fast-moving applications. The typical RTK GNSS receiver’s update rate is 10Hz. The MTi-8 increases this to up to 100Hz by filling in the gaps between GNSS receiver outputs with INS calculations.

Arnout Koelewijn, Product Manager at Movella, said: ‘Unlike a stand-alone RTK GNSS receiver, the MTi-8 provides fast, accurate positioning data at all times in all conditions, as well as giving the orientation measurements which are essential in many applications. The MTi-8 is the new way to supercharge the performance of an RTK GNSS receiver.’

Complete GNSS/INS hardware and software system

The MTi-8 hardware system consists of a 3D gyroscope, 3D accelerometer and magnetometer, and interfaces to an external GNSS receiver and barometer, all housed in a small 12.1mm x 12.1mm x 2.55mm package.

Xsens sensor fusion software generates precisely synchronized measurements of roll, pitch, yaw/heading, velocity and position. The sensor fusion software operates with ultra-low latency to maintain high accuracy at output data rates up to 100Hz.

This makes the MTi-8 ideal for a wide range of slow or fast navigation, stabilization, mapping and scanning applications. It may be used in autonomous vehicles, outdoor mobile robots, and many other products.

Development with the MTi-8 is supported by the Xsens MT Software Suite, which includes:

  • MT Manager – a GUI for Windows and Linux® platforms. MT Manager provides tools including a firmware updater and magnetic field mapper.
  • Software development kit
  • Code examples
  • Drivers for LabVIEW, Robot Operating System (ROS) and GO

Movella also provides BASE by Xsens, an online repository of manuals and a knowledge base, as well as a community forum.

The MTi-8 sensor is available worldwide in production volumes from authorized distributors.

NovAtel Inc. is announcing the End of Life for the following product due to a supplier part change:

IMU-KVH1750

This product is End of Life effective immediately. There is no remaining inventory. IMU-KVH1750 is replaced by IMU-P1750, which is form, fit, and function compatible.

This product will be available for order until:

RACE TECHNOLOGY – Road Gradient and Superelevation analysis with CATS-INS

Road Gradient and Superelevation analysis with CATS-INS

One application I have been looking at recently is using the CATS-INS to survey roads, in terms of measuring the gradient and superelevation.  This is being used to check the maximum safe speeds on roads according to road angle and turn radius.  I’ve attached a couple of screenshots below to show the kind of data which can be achieved.

This shows roll and gradient against distance, the first half of the run was on an old cross country road, the second part on a modern motorway.

Another section on a motorway clearly shows the superelevation used on the bends and how carefully the gradient of the road is controlled.  No abrupt changes in gradient and gradient limited to 2 degrees.

The roof unit wasn’t zeroed before these measurements were taken, so there is an offset on the roll measurements in the data.  Taking the measurements simply involves driving along the road at normal speeds, nothing special required at all and the quality of the data is superb.

This is a notification that Waypoint FTP and licensing servers will experience an extended outage for maintenance this weekend, from 7:00 AM on Saturday, February 12, 2022, to 5:00 PM on Sunday, February 13, 2022 (MST).

During this outage, Waypoint users will be unable to:

  • Activate software licenses, return software licenses, or access the customer portal
  • Access updates to the lists of public sources and coordinates for base stations, precise SP3/CLK files, antenna calibrations, error models, datum/grid parameters, and DCB updates provided via FTP
  • Use the TerraStar NRT service on the “North America” server

External Notice: Hexagon | NovAtel Announces End of Life for Terrain Compensation Software Model on SMART7 Variant

NovAtel Inc. is announcing the End of Life of Terrain Compensation software models on the SMART7 base variant. The SMART7 Terrain Compensation software model is identified in the OEM7 part number as ‘T0’ in the 10th and 11th characters. Terrain Compensation software models will continue to be supported on the
SMART7-W and SMART7-I variants.

Terrain Compensation hardware purchases and software model upgrades for SMART7 base variant will be available for order until:

Wireless sound meter

We now offer a wireless sound meter option for the pass-by noise. The sound meter is the Rion NL-52. This removes the requirement to have a cable going under/around test area to far side sound meter. This is now the recommended option but the software remains compatible with the Larson and Davis sound meters.

 

New R117 (tyre noise) compatibility

Surface temperature option is now available which enables the pass-by noise system to be compatible with the R117 procedure. This option is supplied with R117 test script and results calculation spreadsheet.

 

New live monitor virtual dash

As part of the latest download a new virtual DASH is available for pass-by noise

As an existing customer using our OEM7 products, we wanted to share the latest firmware update enabling the enhanced performance of your devices from Hexagon | NovAtel.

The 7.08.10 firmware update includes enhancements to the TerraStar-C PRO Correction Service for the following OEM7 platforms: OEM719, OEM729, OEM7700, CPT7700, PwrPak7, GT7800, and associated variants, excluding dual antenna variants.

Hexagon’s Autonomy & Positioning division’s RTK From the Sky™ technology delivers the fastest, most reliable PPP corrections worldwide with 99.999% availability, centimeter-level accuracy, and convergence as fast as three minutes. The 7.08.10 firmware release integrates this technology into OEM7 platforms for use with a TerraStar-C PRO subscription.
